FEROCE. This evening, the Northern Illinois Philharmonic performed Tchaikovsky's Pathetique. The first movement has a surprise development that startled a few in the audience. (Just watch the brass getting ready and brace yourself.) I don't know of any other score that has the notation I used for the title. Also performed: the Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms and Wojciech Kilar's Orawa. Mr Kilar might be best known for his Dracula soundtrack. Orawa is, as conductor Brett Mitchell noted, a fun piece. It starts with the first violinist playing a solo Zigeunertanz, well, that's what it sounds like to me. A few more instruments come in. There's a lot of repetition and figure in the minimalist style, but it never bores or wears out its welcome.
