DOGS EAT CATS. Northwestern organized something called the Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational basketball tournament for Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats invited Princeton's Tigers as their Friday opponent, as well as the Cincinnati Bearcats to play Northern's Huskies. I had hoped to go to Northwestern on Friday to check out the dissertation of one of my intellectual children and then to catch the first game. But travel conditions were fit only for Siberian Huskies, and I heeded the travel warnings.

The team, however, had departed DeKalb Thursday night and rallied to defeat Cincinnati before what I understand was a small audience. Northwestern defeated Princeton.

I had some business elsewhere in the northern suburbs and headed over to the tournament afterwards. A few Princetonians came for a weekend in the City of the Big Shoulders ruined by two losses in the tournament. But I did see all sorts of interesting orange ties and other collegiate idiosyncracies uncommon in the land grants and mid-majors.

Northwestern has some theater style seating and I had my choice of seats. Section 105, Row F, seat 7 sounds like a good choice. (Work it out.)

In the title game, Northern Illinois were not exactly gracious guests.

I know that traditions ought not be overturned lightly, but the St. Anthony Chorale as alma mater (to lost causes, more lost causes, more lost causes, q.e.d?)

That makes Northern Illinois 1-1 against the Big East and 2-0 against the Big 11 Ten.

Good going, kids.
