'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, and sunset is perceptibly a great deal later despite the winter solstice (shortest time from sunrise to sunset in the northern hemisphere) only a few days earlier. Tom McMahon posted this instructive diagram


along with a link to a full explanation. I'm going to have to watch for this phenomenon: sunsets are supposed to occur later from December 7 on, with sunrises occurring earlier until January 4.
