With the nation embroiled in a economic recession and professional sports figures seemingly being roasted daily – turning the sports pages into a police blotter – this story pulled at everyone’s heart. It hit all the right chords for DeKalb principal Lindsey Hall and reminded her what is good about sports and her student-athletes.
“Two things stand out about the story,” Hall said. “The team realizes everything came about because another young man lost his mother. We’ve continued to show compassion for him. The other thing is that when the team came back from the game they didn’t tell anyone what happened. I received a fax from [Milwaukee Madison] coach Womack about it. No players or coaches came back and said what happened.
“It was simply a part of what they do, how they act and how they behave. I’ve been an educator for 20 years and have a number of highlights. But this has to be right at the top. I couldn’t be prouder.”
