The Soldiers Home was one of the first racially integrated federal programs, if not the first, a place where white and black Civil War veterans lived together many years before the armed forces were themselves desegregated, according to newspaper archives. It might have been the only Soldiers Home with a view of a ballpark. The Veterans Administration built bleachers on Mockingbird Hill overlooking County Stadium. The roof mechanism for Miller Park obstructs any such viewing from the grounds.
CARING FOR THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. Milwaukee's Soldiers Home, authorized by President Lincoln, and the last intact Soldiers Home, is on the list of endangered historic places.
