WHERE'S THE MERCHANT OF POWER WHEN YOU NEED HIM?  Radio news report this morning, about the aftereffects of Monday morning's derecho (everything that could have been blown away had been struck belowdecks here, the south side of DeKalb relatively unscathed; Rockford, Belvidere, Sycamore and the northern parts of Chicago got clobbered): power still out in Beach Park and Holdridge, and apparently much of northern Lake County, possibly not to be restored until Saturday.

Once upon a time, before the Public Utility Holding Company Act, Commonwealth Edison and the North Shore Line were part of the same company, and the mind boggles at The Road of Service being shut down for the better part of a week.
