It's usually good news to be the fourth-best gymnast in the competition.  Unless the second- and third-best are also on your team, and you're at the Olympics.
It’s an emotional day for this American team, which has just delivered a remarkable performance and set the score to beat in the qualifications of these Olympic Games.  But it’s a shocking heartbreak for America’s national and world champion, and one of the favorites to win the biggest prize of all here in London. 
I don't know the origin of this quota for country qualifiers. Wouldn't it be karma if the rule was pushed through with the urging of the U.S. Olympic Committee during the Cold War as a way of limiting Soviet medals?
