THE UPLIFTING POWER OF WATER.

London's Tower Bridge is simply a fancy version of the canonical Chicago bascule bridge, apart from the water-powered machinery.  The towers include standpipes necessary for proper operation.

In Milwaukee's Third Ward, Hoffco shoe polish comes from a factory with the last working hydraulic elevator in the city.  The factory building is a converted sail loft, now commingled with brew-pubs, art galleries, and loft apartments.

Developers covet the shoe polish factory. "I tell them, 'Thank you, but we are making shoe polish here. I'm not interested,'" says owner Lorraine Hoffman.
