The summer of 2014 is turning into an early Christmas for devotees of Big Steam.

Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 is in the roundhouse at Cheyenne for restoration to service.

A relatively new Chesapeake and Ohio Mallet Compound 2-6-6-2 is going from the Baltimore and Ohio Museum to the Western Maryland Scenic for restoration.  The Mallet will fit the Scenic's turntables.

The same article notes that restoration of Norfolk and Western 611 continues.  And 611 will have company in the operating streamlined steam category.  The Coalition for Sustainable Rail will use a streamlined cladding similar to that on a sister Santa Fe 4-6-4 on its demonstration locomotive.

Closer to Cold Spring Shops, the Illinois Railway Museum have announced steam days on which 1630 will pull trains.
