Once upon a time, the Pere Marquette Railroad offered passenger train service Detroit to Grand Rapids, and Chicago to Muskegon or Grand Rapids. (Boat trains to Ludington disappeared a long time ago.) The Grand Rapids service remains, one round-trip daily under Amtrak auspices. But Michigan's Department of Transportation will be holding public meetings this week in connection with a plan to restore cross-Lower Peninsula train services.
