The Sycamore and DeKalb fire departments both reported no emergency responses related to the holiday season for the duration of their “Red Wreath” programs.Yes, there were fire, ambulance, and police calls. None, though, involving the hazards that accompany putting cut trees in the vicinity of fireplaces and candles.
Each year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, the departments hang wreaths outside their fire stations and replace a red lightbulb with a white one each time they respond to a holiday-related emergency call.
The goal of the program is to promote awareness of fire safety during the holiday season, as things such as Christmas lights, combustible decorations, candles and space heaters all cause potential fire hazards during this time of year.
KEEPING THE FESTIVE SEASON SAFE.
