Salvation Army on pace to hit $90K goal.  "It wasn't easy to feel festive last year, when Walmart, Walgreens and Jewel all made companywide decisions that the Salvation Army's workers and volunteers weren't allowed to ring bells before Thanksgiving."

This year, a few stores allowed the bell ringers as early as 9 November.  Economic recovery or not, there is always work for the local charities.  The small platoons of civil society can help, sometimes a dollar at a time.
