Wisconsin's Door County exists today as a place for Illinoisans to sink their money, although it got its name for Lake Michigan's propensity to sink ships.  The first European ship to sink, Rene-Robert Sieur de La Salle's Griffon, may have foundered near modern-day Charlevoix, Michigan.  (Wisconsin legend has her foundering off Washington Island, perhaps aided by Thor claiming Sister Bay for the Swedes.)  After protracted negotiations, a research team has permission to explore a wreck that may be Griffon.
