Last night, NBC's coverage of the Stanley Cup finals included, at the beginning of the second period, a recollection of a minor-league hockey team, the Nashville Dixie Flyers. The team's sponsor? The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis "Dixie Line" Railway, whose fleet of Midwest to Florida trains included the Dixie Flagler (extra points, dear reader, for puzzling this out), Dixie Limited, and Dixie Flyer.
It is an urban legend that in 1862, a squad of Canadian raiders stole the Stanley Cup from Charlotte and hijacked a Dixie Line train to get their treasure to Niagara Falls and safety.
It is true, however, that Louisville and Nashville's Pan-American used to have its own radio show on Nashville's WSM Radio.
