FRIDAY short TAKES.

These will be the final Friday short Takes for this year.

The weekly roundup of pithy elaborations of traditional Cold Spring Shops themes follows.

3.  Indeed.  "University presidents and deans should keep quiet as a rule on public policy matters."

4.  Curricular standards also matter.  "If, after multiple generations of yammering about diversity, universities still aren’t diverse enough, maybe it’s time to give up on that approach and try something different, like cutting costs and improving access for poor students."

5.  Moral masturbation.  "[Elite universities] sell elite status, but they cover this up with incessant praise of social justice."

6.  Logic is hegemonic.  "The social justice left does not believe in integrity or consistency or, in fact, logic at all. It does not persuade; it bludgeons. It does not discuss; it harangues."

7.  Bipartisan hegemony is doubleplusungood.  "America's major political parties, and their most loyal partisans, have become toxic and dangerous to our liberty."

8.  Fusion, still over the event horizon.  "The experiment, according to people aware of the outcome, produced more energy than expected, damaging some of the facility's equipment."

9.  Dementia Joe's Weimar freak show.  "[Sam] Brinton was trotted out as part of the LGBTQ++/565=screw you crowd."

10.  By their fruitcakes shall ye know them.  "They’re credentialed, but they’re not actually very well educated."

11.  Deconstruct that!  "If rights consist of whatever crazy notion you have in the moment, or whatever reality your mental issue causes you to deny, then there are no rights."

12.  Get confirmed, baptized, mitzvahed, or transitioned?  "Twelve-year-olds can’t get tattoos, can’t drink booze or do anything."  Early adolescence is a hazardous time for a kid.

13.  Intersectionality is a church, after all.  "Mocking pronouns is like questioning divine-right kingship in the age of absolute monarchies."

14.  Pragmatism still has a chance.  "Few gave [maverick Democrat Adam Frisch] much of a chance in the conservative 3rd Congressional District, which edges up against some famed, liberal ski towns but is dominated by vast, less glamorous and energy-rich swathes of rural Colorado."  Either way, there would be no vote for Nancy Pelosi out of Lauren Boebert's district.

15.  The tattooed lady's lament.  "Nobody close to her thought to stop her."

16.  The deprivation is the point.  "Look for the planet-saving rent-seekers to hobble the development of fusion energy with regulatory and funding constraints with the same playbook used to hobble nuclear power 50 years ago."

17.  "Shooting the shit" isn't metaphorical at university.  “You win a debate with a better argument, not by force.”

18.  Woke subjectivism.  "This is what happens to language and logic when you reject what’s demonstrably true in favor of what a sympathetic group of people wishes were true. You start out with good intentions but end up not being able to say clearly what you mean."
