Official Washington offers us a choice between normal and crazy, for arbitrary values of crazy, which "touches on many Americans' sense that things have gone weirdly wrong in recent years." We see it. Official Washington does not. "What you saw during Tuesday night's speech was a bipartisan suicide pact." It's a suicide pact among the Correct Thinkers. "This classist separation is often an intentional part of what drives the left, who has always believed, despite airy protestations to the contrary, in the necessity of an especially enlightened politburo to run the State for the good of a dull proletariat. Sadly, many on the right think the same way — though they tend to want less regulation and lower taxes." Would a larger House of Representatives have more True Believers?
Look up in the sky.
1. Oh, shut up. "The decision to display and continue to display this exhibition despite the harm it perpetuates is a deeply problematic issue." It gets weirder. "Non-consensual viewing of certain works."
2. You shut up, too. "As an 'English' department, we acknowledge how the language and literature of hegemonic cultures have both served as a tool of (colonial) oppression and an expression of paths to liberation. "
3. Mostly changed for the worse. "The push for equity in science above all else has dramatically changed the profession of an academic professor."
4. It's about organizational survival, not positive change. "Even good causes originally espoused by the ‘left’ side of politics of a given age - like civil rights and early feminism - have morphed into monsters devouring every semblance of logic and common sense."
5. She teaches a diversity course. "Jewish students and a pro-Israel group are accusing an Arab professor and critic of Israeli policy of antisemitism."
6. Prices are determined at the margin. "Would you prefer to live in a world in which the number of people who can skillfully fight fires and teach children is very large but the number of people who can skillfully play sports and act is very tiny, or in a world in which the number of people who can skillfully fight fires and teach children is very tiny but the number of people who can skillfully play sports and act is very large?" Does your answer hold for arbitrary values of "skillfully"?
7. Healing the blind is "ableism". "That’s kinda like bitching at farmers for making a living off of people’s hunger." If we took literally the admonition not to benefit by somebody else's misfortune, we'd all be poorer.
9. Seriously? "The engines of white supremacy, which constructed the forms of institutional and economic racism that keep the poor poor, are obscured behind attractive political personalities such as Barack Obama, whom Cornel West called 'a Black mascot for Wall Street.
10. Those Fourth Turning shocks? "Everything still worked well enough. And then it didn’t."
12. Yes, among many things. "Journalists often lack sufficient grounding in economic subject matter."
13. I am the GREAT AND POWERFUL ... wizard of Oz. "Fauci lied, and now he is admitting it. In writing." Trust but verify.
14. Deconstruction is subversion. "Americans cannot protect, preserve, and exercise their rights if they don’t know what those rights are." Perhaps Our Progressive Betters hope for that.
15. Democrats. "They have bad ideas and bad policies."
16. Socialists spill the beans. "Social Security isn’t a savings account: it’s insurance against poverty in old age. And like all insurance policies, some people make out better than others." Where is the cash surrender value?
17. Segregation now: "Latina Faces Backlash as Miss Coppin State."
18. Broke, woke, stroke. "Unless universities address the tension between calls for equity and merit, they cannot restore faith in higher education as an institution that educates well-rounded citizens." Spell out the tradeoff.
19. The wisdom of separated, enumerated powers. "A presidential budget, along with party reform, would allow activist presidents the ability to pursue the interests of a national majority." Look what a hundred years gets you.
20. Extraordinary popular delusions. "The doctors privately recognized these false self-diagnoses as a manifestation of social contagion. They even acknowledged that suicide has an element of social contagion." At least medical science recognized eating disorders as something to be treated. By contrast, "But clinics like the one where I worked are creating a whole cohort of kids with atypical genitals—and most of these teens haven’t even had sex yet. They had no idea who they were going to be as adults."
