THE CORRELATION OF FORCES IS CHANGING.

Margaret "University Diaries" Soltan links to "Academic freedom is the loser when big donors hound US university presidents" by Robert B. (Often wrong, never in doubt) Reich.  She highlights his concluding passage,  "As a Jew, I cannot help but worry, too, that the actions of these donors will fuel the very antisemitism they claim to oppose – based on the perilous stereotype of wealthy Jewish bankers controlling the world."  It's not as though an intramural fight within the coastal establishment between university donors, some of whom are Jewish, and university trustees and administrators, some of whom are Jewish, is going to lead to any revision of priors among the tiki-torch-Charlottesville protest types.

There's a lengthy essay by Robert "Bastiat's Window" Graboyes that lays out, in detail, the many ways in which the correlation of forces is changing.  Yes, he addresses the tiki torch crowd.  They're old news.

The marchers were a stretch-limo clown car of around 250 . A year later, Unite the Right 2 in Washington, DC attracted 20-30 marchers. This is no consolation to the loved ones of Heather Heyer, killed in Charlottesville, but it doesn’t constitute a major threat to American civic life.

On the other hand, he argues, the intersectional left is the home office of what he understands as antisemitism.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed the problem in an emotional Senate speech for which he should be saluted. But his address was merely Step 1 in a very long 12-step program. He and his colleagues have yet to tackle the fact that the most virulent antisemitism today flows directly from contemporary liberalism’s innocuous-sounding but deeply corrosive pieties: the neo-eugenics of critical race/legal/educational theory, intersectionality, “antiracism,” “anticolonialism,” and oppressor/oppressed dichotomies. These, in turn, have spawned a massive industry of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs; boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) demands; and calls for monetary and nonmonetary reparations—all of which require someone in power to taxonomize and judge people on the basis of immutable characteristics, rather than on their individual actions.

It's a surprise it took so long for the rupture among the self-styled progressives to emerge.  Underlying the diversity industry is the so-called theoretical apparatus of critical studies, in which the Fundamental Postulate is that differences between proportions observed in the general population and proportions observed in a sub-population are prima facie evidence of discriminatory behavior by somebody.  Stir in some intersectionality, and it is possible to create ever finer partitions of the population, with ever larger divergence of that partition's share of the general population from its share in the sub-population of interest.  From there, it is not so hard to infer that if some sub-populations are "under-represented" relative to their share of the general population when goodies such as deanships or trusteeships are being allocated, other sub-populations must be "over-represented."  A stupid Member of Congress might invoke "the Benjamins" and get a diversity pass for it, particularly after saying an Act of Contrition.

The diversity industry, though, is full of people for whom "over-representation" is an evil, and being well-to-do is unearned privilege.  Mr Graboyes notes some people who have a conscience.

Senator Schumer’s speech included the following: “Many of the people who have expressed these sentiments in America aren’t neo-Nazis, or card-carrying Klan members, or Islamist extremists … They are in many cases people that most liberal Jewish Americans felt previously were their ideological fellow travelers.”

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), a member of the House Progressive Caucus, wrote: “The time has come to confront not only the symptoms but the disease: a Democratic Socialist industrial complex that indoctrinates young Americans with an anti-Israel hatred so virulent that it renders them indifferent to the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.”

You expect hyperbole from self-styled progressives, dear reader.  You welcome constructive self-criticism all the same, and hope that the beginning of wisdom might be in recognizing that the so-called critical theories are an intellectual dead end.
