PICK YOUR FIGHTS WISELY. Last night, Lawrence O'Donnell worked himself into high dudgeon about somebody from Reason TV asking actor Matt Damon about incentives for schoolteachers. He didn't get into compensating differentials or hazardous duty pay (the common schools being an example of a labor market in which better working conditions often come bundled with higher pay, unsurprisingly, the premium for a house in a school district with high test scores includes higher school taxes). It gave Mr O'Donnell occasion to rant about a perceived vast reactionary assault on teachers' unions, and he dared the tea partiers to look for misbehaving police officers or other perceived mascots of the right.
The problem with his rant was that he picked on the folks at Reason, for whom evidence of overweening government behavior is newsworthy, no matter the official or the office or the jurisdiction. I don't have to point to the magazine's work on crime labs and corrupt cops and corporate welfare for casinos, because editor Nick Gillespie and his rapid-response team put it together for me.
