As the [interurban] cars passed 28th Street, the breezes carried through the open windows the nauseating smell of the red brick plant of the Red Star Yeast Company. At least, the Rapid Transit rider was whipped past in a few short seconds. The motorist who uses the expressway, which is now located on the former Rapid Transit roadbed, may spend endless minutes and more, creeping past Red Star, "enjoying" the smell which still oozes out during those not frequent occasions when the expressway is not "expressing." Progress of a generation!Progress of another generation: the smell is gone, but there are still occasions when the expressway doesn't express.

OLFACTORY LANDMARK GONE.
There's still a Red Star Yeast, but it's no longer being cultured in Milwaukee, and the factory is coming down. The article suggests that the factory's proximity to the expressway raised its profile. "The smell was inescapable, enveloping motorists on their going in and their coming out." Joseph Canfield's TM (Central Electric Railfans Association bulletin 112) offers a more precise explanation.
