TENURE.

Bruce Weber might have had problems keeping his Illinois team focused, but Kansas State quickly hired him.  Apparently past experience getting a team to the title game counts for more, and Kansas State has a history of going with the college basketball equivalents of Gene Mauch and Dave Bristol.  Several of those hires have what the Boston Herald charitably calls "baggage", but there may be little room for radical innovators in college basketball.  (Illinois, curiously, has a history as a high career placement for basketball coaches who excel in less visible appointments subsequent to their time in Corruptana.)

Never mind the industrial reserve army of men coaching the women, or striving assistants in the mid-majors, or successful high school coaches.  Gene Mauch, and Bruce Weber, have the equivalent of tenure.
