FRIDAY short TAKES.

Wer zuletzt lacht? "The Packers did a marvelous job in sending off an almost-40-year old QB, who said he was '90%' retired just over a month ago." Moving on.  Rodgers breaks Favre's record for longest Midwest Goodbye.  There are standards.  "For all those MVP awards, Rodgers led the Packers to one Vince Lombardi Trophy."  You know my position.

Meanwhile, Dementia Joe has a job to finish.  "They've created a mentality of despair among young Americans, who look on as crime soars but hear nothing but a drumbeat from liberal media outlets about how bad the cops are."  In their despair, though, they may see no better choice, being compelled not to propose new pronouns being the alternative to forcing others to use them.  "Using the power of the state for cultural engineering is now something opposed to progressivism."  Or perhaps everything is fine.  "The inner workings of those in the Biden White House seem quite opaque to me, except for their unrelenting leftism, destructiveness, and incompetence. Half of America seems cool with that, though."  Or not?  "You guys literally created this."  We know.  "Apparently not satisfied with merely damaging America, he aims to destroy it."  With an asterisk on the understudy.  "Being the historical 'first' whatever really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans to the average voter, especially if you keep demonstrating that not only are you really, really bad at what you do."  The worst is yet to come.

The weekly roundup of pithy elaborations of traditional Cold Spring Shops themes follows.

1.  Say a land acknowledgement at breakfast.  "The butter now serves as a testament to our tortured history; the Indians have been removed and the empty land remains."

2.  Develop your jive detector!  "By now, whenever you see the agit-prop platitude spreading misinformation, does your brain not instantly translate that into telling the truth?"

3.  Black-out.  "The source of electricity generation seems to get glossed over or lost in the haze to most."

4.  Bed, made, slept in.  "The vast majority of Chicagoans were satisfied with the way things were going in Chicago."

5.  Is nobody familiar with Moby-Dick?  "Still, there is a definite irony in the fact that it is now the advocates for oil and gas who want to save the whales."

6.  It's called rent-seeking.  "Many of the subsidies that go to the relatively affluent don’t look like subsidies."

7.  Yes, Julia Conley, there is a Swamp.  "US Chamber of Commerce Is Big Business Masquerading as Mom and Pop Shops."

8.  Dispatches from Weimar Montana.  "If you are denying gender-affirming care and forcing a trans child to go through puberty, that is tantamount to torture, and this body should be ashamed."

9.  Getting mugged by reality is better than getting mugged.  “I’m a single female. I live on my own. Why not protect myself?”

10.  A fearless prediction.  "As much as people natter on about the evils of the Baby Boom, I have a hunch one day the children and grandchildren of the Millennials and Zeepers are going to hate their elders much, much more."

11.  I'm not quoting Pajamas Media types here.  "Meanwhile, back in America, hundreds of thousands of immigrants remained jailed in concentrations camps that Biden oversees, a gulag that features the forced separation of parents from children."  Whether a landlord or a commissar puts you to work digging potatoes is left as an exercise.

12.  Murphy is an optimist.  "On something this complex, if you have a perfect flight on your first test flight, smart people tend to ask if you really got everything perfect; or, if you just got lucky and missed something that is going to bite you in the ass later as the odds change?"  That angel of death just might have prostate troubles, y'know?

13.  A corollary to Prof Scam? "Many of our best and most effective thinkers, writers, and speakers have voluntarily isolated themselves in intellectual ghettos, and have consented, sometimes explicitly, to have little or no direct contact with students in mainstream courses, and no influence over what is taught in the majors that organize the US curriculum."

14.  The surgeon general is not an economist.  "For Fauci to now sit back and claim that public officials should have spent more time listening to economists and other advisers that weren't him is both true—they absolutely should have!"  It's three years too late for der Giftzwerg to develop a conscience.

15.  Sometimes the best intellectual argument is "F**k you."  "In Anointed/Benighted discourse, the goal of the Anointed isn’t an honest exchange of views so much as teaching the Benighted what the new truth is: changing and broadening their provincial little minds." If you're selling weak beer, though, you might be able to make amends. "If you really want to make some money, put Riley Gaines on a beer can."  See infra.

16.  What's Chinese for Starnesville?  "The Maoists had no regrets about eliminating private property; they merely decried the complete breakdown of order as an unintended consequence. Why, they must have wondered, wasn’t society bending to their plans?"

17.  A church, not an academy?  "Philosophers (and publishers) need to tolerate those with sacrilegious answers."  If the academicians don't rediscover this principle, what comes next will not be amusing.  "Any attempt to “control” legitimate faculty research through coercion to please powerful interests would violate the university’s First Amendment obligation to respect academic freedom. "

18.  Trashing your value proposition?  "[Pro basketballers] virtue signaling that year turned a lot of people off."

19.  Social Security was unjust from the beginning.  "A just system would differentiate between those who have jobs and careers and those whose work is physically demanding and those who isn’t. It would probably also factor in differential life expectancy somehow."

20.  Replacing coherent heuristics with incoherent heuristics will not end well.  "The whole point of critical theory is to take simple and understood concepts and turn them into a jumble of gobbledygook in which your normal understanding of what things are and how things work into a total mess."

21.  They won't.  "Instead of pretending Republicans are monsters for demanding small budget reductions, Democrats need to start putting facts ahead of politics."

22.  It's a cult.  "If nice words from a well-intentioned president were all it took, we'd have solved abortion years ago."

23.  Equip specialists with fancy gizmos?  "If you can figure out how a tiny bundle of cells marks the time of heartbeats, if you can get a specific protein past a cell wall and attach it to a mitochondrion, then how hard can it be to fix traffic, poverty, or crime?"  If they're so smart, why aren't they rich?

24.  Indeed.  "Public schools have two basic jobs: educate our kids and keep them safe. All too often our schools can’t do either."

25.  The Church of Intersectionality has vows of chastity.  "[Jazz] Jennings required three corrective surgeries, still struggles in the dating world, and has never experienced orgasm."  Opting out might not release congregants from those vows.  "My penis is gone forever, and I regret it."
