I don't know if there are any contemporary collegians of a Normal disposition reading Cold Spring Shops. Whether there are, or not, let me note an instructive suggestion from Bookworm Room. "I was thinking about the hecklers’ veto, and it occurred to me that the classic movie Casablanca might have an answer."
Face it, dear Normals, if you endorse Normal things on campus, you're going to offend somebody who finds fulfillment in an otherwise empty life by loudly endorsing something declinist, it doesn't matter whether it's the jihad or the sexual underground or invoking one of the eternally tedious -isms or -phobias. Preparation favors the bold.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, the next time the leftist shrieking started, it turned out that the conservative speaker came prepared? I imagine the speaker pulling out his or her smartphone, turning the volume on as loudly as possible, sticking it right up to the microphone (also on top volume), and blasting the room with a patriotic song. Even better, those who came to hear the speech would sing along.A commenter notes that counter-heckling the wokies also has potential. Either way, we're in the punishment cycle of a grim strategy equilibrium. It came to this, though, when the Nash equilibrium of reasoned discourse became one more bourgeois (that was a sneer word back in the day) convention to be deconstructed.
