FRIDAY short TAKES.

Just how does the public get serviced by its politicians?  "Left unsaid is why 50 years as a politician and officeholder should be considered as of more value than 50 years as a farmer, an entrepreneur, research scientist at a drug company, or night-shift worker at a steel mill or a semiconductor fab. This kind of privilege seems directly contrary to the whole idea of equality before the law."

Speaking of privilege, there's Dementia Joe privilege.  "Pushing back at the image of a crotchety grandpa, he came across like a crotchety grandpa."  With unanswered questions.  "If Biden is too old to be charged, isn’t he too old to hold the most powerful position in the world? And if he’s not too old to hold the most powerful position in the world, why is he too old to be charged?"  Can't we turf him out?  "Joe Biden is too old to be an effective president, and he’s knocking on the door of being too old to be president, period. It was always absurd to believe that Biden would be able to handle one of the most challenging jobs in the world as an octogenarian, and the notion of his serving two full terms and remaining in the Oval Office until age 86 is ludicrous."  His inner circle noticed, long ago.  "People in the meeting later told others in frustration that his winding process and irritability were making it more difficult to reach decisions about the border."  Dementia Joe dithers, we bear what follows.

Some peoples' salaries depend on them not seeing it.  "The president’s enablers are knowingly keeping a diminished man in the driver’s seat — which makes him, and the whole world, unsafe."  There are, still, the delusional.  "The White House will need to get Biden in front of interviewers, where he actually does quite well, and in widely seen venues, to counter it. It’s really as simple as that."  Not, though, Paul "Forehead" Begala.  “Look, I’m a Biden supporter. And I slept like a baby last night. I woke up every two hours and wet the bed. This is terrible for Democrats. And anybody with a functioning brain knows that.”  Joe Biden is a placeholder.

That is, unless you fancy yourself a court intellectual.  Sic semper tyrannis?  "The clerisy’s reaction (to social media bypassing content protectors) is no different than that of the Catholic Church in the 15th and 16th centuries: moral panic that triggers a repressive response."  That is, if they're not actively lying.  "Why will the media make Republicans Pounce!® the narrative? Because if they report on Biden's cognitive crisis with any honesty, they will have to account for their own efforts to propagandize Biden as vital and up to the job."  Because that's how they think!  "Democratic president is senile: why would we want to report on that? Republicans point out that Democratic president is senile: that’s the story!"

The weekly round-up of pithy elaborations on traditional Cold Spring Shops themes follows.

2.  Sometimes, the only possible intellectual argument is "Sod off, Swampy."  "Increasingly, the 'expert class' insists that people not suffering from psychological delusions are the ones who should be branded as delusional and dangerous."

3.  Doomer Boomer.  "The most fortunate generation in history realizes that it's nearing its end pretty soon."

4.  The subprime party schools first!  "Restoring fiscal discipline, though painful in the moment, is the only way to permanently fix our higher education system."

6.  First the bourgeois norms.  "People at or near the top of the social and economic scale tend to behave in ways that lead to success."  Then the preludes and etudes.  "The kids whose parents can afford piano lessons are also the ones who tend to have the discipline, focus, and family structure that ensures that they will get the most out of those lessons and therefore enjoy that non-academic value."

7.  Sissified progressives?  "No wonder so many men are leaving the Democrat Party… it has been an abusive relationship for quite some time now."

8.  Yeah, "Feminist Backstop" will poll real well.  "Rights Advocates Urge Biden to Stop Stigmatizing 'Abortion on Demand'."

9.  Hamas found out.  "Atrocities didn’t cow the Israelis, but angered them."

10.  Public intellectuals never learn.  "When we find that being right in a public forum is not enough to bring people around, we respond by trying to be right more forcefully, aggressively, or exasperatedly."

11.  On Earth, as it is in Heaven.  "The Manichean temptation should be resisted."

12.  National Greatness Conservatism ... wasn't.  "What did Republicans have to show for it?"

13.  Bidenomics.  "There's a straight line between shrinkflation, inflation, and the Biden administration's own fiscal irresponsibility."

14.  Which won't happen.  All Donald Trump has to do to defeat Dementia Joe is to shut up.  His loyalists won't let him.  "Trump-loyalist leaders of the party look like the characters in the Star Wars bar scene instead of competent, professional, clear-eyed problem solvers."

15.  Collectivism undermines our dignity.  "Collectivist logic, whose purported love of new freedoms always served to justify expanding control over people, property, incomes, currencies, and career opportunities by a small sect in government."

16.  Voluntary exchange:  "One of the wonders of human society is how the individuals of our species found a way to coordinate our actions to collaborate without anyone being in command."

17.  Where's the fun in that?  "Stop insulting people and address the issues they are concerned about."

18.  These United States are still the best.  "Even with inequities and the turmoil and the clowns who run the place, fact is, we still suck the least."  National Review: please detail Charles Cooke to cover this summer's Republican convention.  "Forget New York, New Orleans, Charleston, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, or Las Vegas, the food and service are better in Milwaukee than they are in Moscow."  Yes, and the Gemütlichkeit will go on after the delegates go home.

19.  Mediocrity is a choice.  "The Bucks, as it stands right at this very moment are NOT a championship team."
