COMPETENT PEOPLE?

Inside Higher Ed editor Sara Custer laments the new strings the Trump administration is attaching to funding the universities (news flash: there have always been strings attached, there's a post in preparation noting the same) and asks, "Who is going to rebuild higher ed after it’s dismantled?"

Higher education has been doing a pretty good job of self-dismantling for thirty years.

Where are we now?  Regular "college bubble updates" on Pajamas Media.  A political economy of inequality that touches on tax cuts at the same time the U.S. News problem suggests a flight to perceived quality of higher education, a flight that I fear is more about being able to mingle with and form networks of high achievers, rather than to hear from the very best Mr Chips regularly.

Maybe money-hemorrhaging jokes run by idiots might do better by reclaiming the good of the intellect and returning to the norms of civilized discourse.  If that means turfing out more senior administrators and the editors of the house organs for all wokeness, all the time, and for business as usual publishing acts of contrition and retiring to their wine cellars all the better.
