DOESN'T THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL CONTEXTUALIZE THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT?

A committee of public safety woke-scolds in Washington, D. C. are of the view that certain of the monuments, including those properly belonging to These United States in the aggregate, excessively honor people who owned slaves or otherwise "supported oppression."  That committee recommended that such monuments be removed, relocated, or contextualized.  Sort of like how Stalin decided to remove the Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer in Moscow, a deed that a subsequent generation of Russians spent a lot of money undoing.

I wonder, though, if that committee is really confessing what a half-century of "inclusive" education has achieved.  At the time of the (first?) Civil War, the Washington Monument was still under construction, and in the middle of that war, President Lincoln issued an emancipation proclamation (codifying what was going on in the states in rebellion) and gave a speech at Gettysburg that you might have noted or remembered.

It is possible, dear reader, to view the Gettysburg Address, pivot, and look toward the Washington Monument.

The World War II victory memorial now is at the east end of the Reflecting Pool.  It's possible to get a picture of the east front of the Lincoln Memorial in full sunlight in the morning.

It ought not be that difficult to get the chronology straight: first there was Independence, then a series of compromises, including between feudal slave-holding and commercial abolition-minded states established the constitutional republic, then it took a "great civil war" to secure that new birth of freedom.

Power Line's John Hinderaker fears that the current crop of Democrats might be letting loose the forces that would produce another civil war, if unchecked.

The interesting question, to me, is whether there is a single Democratic Party politician who will object to de-platforming Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Francis Scott Key, George Mason, John Tyler, Alexander Graham Bell and the rest. I’m not holding my breath. If you vote for a Democratic candidate for any office in any state or on a national ticket, this is what you are voting for.

And all for the lack of a proper history in the common schools?
