This week's reinforcement of traditional Cold Spring Shops themes covers a wide range of topics.
1. The ladies cut down the nets. Golden parachutes for failed coaches, not so much? "With billions of dollars flowing to major universities annually for big-time college sports, subsidies from the institutions’ main budgets are increasingly being seen as unnecessary and unreasonable by students, faculty members, alumni and donors, especially at a time when tuitions are rising and revenues are falling as enrollment declines nationally."
2. Minnie is f**king Goofy. "Disney leadership is actively pushing children out of Neverland and directly into an adult’s sexualized world, where they can be groomed for others enjoyment."
3. Does Oglethorpe hire Division I coaches? "The obscenity [Meredith Raimondo] staged at Oberlin will cost the school thirty mill; here’s hoping Oglethorpe has a large legal payout fund."
4. Self-destructive vanguardism comes for the sexual underground. "Quietly, America said, 'Why do you want [to] sexualize children?' I’ve never seen the left so completely misread the room."
5. Parents, push back against experts. “They’ve just been making this up all along.” (In some Wisconsin school boards they are.)
6. Elaborating the category error of the alphabet people. "To push young people who are almost certainly gay toward drastic and irreversible bodily mutilation, instead of giving them time to figure things out for themselves, is to do something that couldn’t be more antithetical to what the gay-rights movement was supposed to be about. And yet the sometime gay-rights groups that now call themselves LGBT-rights groups promote this reckless lunacy aggressively—and routinely smear those, gay or otherwise, who dare to advise caution."
7. If everyone is a racist, nobody is a racist. "[P]eople have seen the 'racist' and 'bigot' accusations used so often and in such absurd ways that the epithets have lost some of their power and people are willing to defy those who would label them that way."
8. Central, even if counterintuitive. "Comparative advantage is one of the most counterintuitive concepts in all of economics."
9. Indeed. "None of the policies Biden has enacted throughout his short presidency have alleviated the problems they were meant to solve."
10. Drain. The. Swamp. "[F]ree marketeers tend to believe that the existing patchwork of subsidies and handouts ought to be stopped since they serve as market distortions, artificially propping up companies that wouldn't succeed or be competitive on their own merits."
11. Aaron Burr cannot be reached for comment. "Will Kamala Harris rank as one of the worst VPs in history?"
12. You say you want some devolution? "The Democrats do not have a single reasonable leader that is acceptable to any major portion of real America."
13. There are laws of conservation in economics. "When it comes to monetary economics, Friedman certainly is still running the show."
14. The deprivation is the point. "Much of what the Left had traditionally demonized and wanted gone from American life—from gasoline to beefsteak to new pickup trucks—became so inflated in price as to be nearly unattainable." Also, "Thrifting is fun when it’s optional."
16. Of course. "It’s rather funny that western journalists are only now concerned about large-scale electoral reforms when it means liberals won’t get their way."
17. Athens and Jerusalem? "Liberalism, with its human rights discourse and the rest, is a secularized form of Christianity." Nothing, though, to excess. "Democratic institutions, important as they are, only get us so far. We must insist on liberalism as well: free speech, private property protections, religious liberty, freedom of movement, constitutional constraints and separations of power and rule of law and all the rest."
19. Opting out. "Being too busy, feeling like no one would be interested in dating them, and feeling like they are too old to date are also all reasons that single non-daters give more often than concerns about COVID-19 exposure."
20. Another way Biden is a failure. " If you paid off your student loan debt or worked your way through college, you’re a miserable chump for doing things the right way."
21. Deny coherent beliefs, enjoy the incoherence. "In the context of [critical studies], the realization of the imperative is all that matters; it is the sine qua non of one’s existence."
22. It was corona tyranny. "In short, what we have done to our young people, in an inefficient and largely futile effort to protect the very sick elderly, is a crime."
23. Stop taking economics classes? "There are other people in the world who have more to teach you."
24. Indeed not. "[T]he resolve [of the so-called rules based international order] to fight to the last Ukrainian is not as valorous as it seems."
25. The end of a worldwide Marshallian improvement? "Globalization coincided with an increase in economic inequality within nations, but also a decrease in inequality among them as developing countries raised their standard of living."
