A McDonald's in Marshfield, Missouri started the battle simply asking, "Hey DQ! Do you wanna have a sign war?"A few other businesses got in on the fun, including a bank along the street: "Ice cream machine broken? We have a loan for that."
The nearby Dairy Queen accepted the challenge, writing in response, "We would but we're 2 busy making ice cream."
The McDonald's responded, "That's cute our ice cream makes it self."
So far, the back and forth between the chains is pretty mundane, but this is when it gets ... frosty.
"You mean it actually works," the Dairy Queen responded, adding, "Shocker."
Proprietors have to be careful about what they post. Presumably the operator of an ice cream parlor would have to go through proper channels to get the money. Some years ago, a local (and now closed) gyros joint posted a series of rhyming couplets on their sign, but when that included a riff on "winner winner chicken dinner" they quickly had to change that as people started ordering chicken dinners and asking what they had won.
