THE FINAL GORBASM.

It's unfortunate that Rush Limbaugh is not with us to deliver it.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, for those of you too young to have remembered or to those of you who weren’t paying attention back in the 1980s, let me give you a little history lesson. During the 1980s, the Al-Qaeda of the day was the Soviet Union, and to a lesser extent the ChiComs. But the Soviet Union was the enemy of the United States, acknowledged enemy of the United States.

Soviet communism was expanding.

Every Soviet leader — Gorbachev, Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov — was doing their best to expand communist beachheads all over the world. Nicaragua, Cuba, you name it. They were literally trying to expand everywhere. The Democrat Party did not see the Soviet Union as much of an enemy. They didn’t see the Soviet Union as much of a threat. They saw the Soviet Union as a great attempt, actually, at equality and fairness in governing a society.

Then came Mikhail Gorbachev, and a lot of people who should have known better wet themselves.

Ronald Reagan referred to the Soviet as “the evil empire.” That angered the American media and the Democrat Party like you can’t believe. Reagan went into the radio studio one day to record a Saturday morning presidential address, and before recording he joked, “The bombing begins in five minutes.” That was leaked out, and the press and the Democrat Party went bonkers, thinking Reagan was on the verge of losing it and was literally gonna bomb the Soviet Union!

You didn’t joke about the Soviet Union! You didn’t joke about nuclear weapons! was horrible. So when Gorbachev and the birthmark — which grew as the Soviet Union expanded. You could see that birthmark grow. You could see Maine, see the East Coast, see Florida! As the Soviets’ expansion and infiltration of the U.S. culture grew, so did the Gorbachev birthmark.

Thus, dear reader, did the Gorbasm segment begin, complete with fitting music.

Surely El Rushbo could have some fun with the kind of swooning that the same order of people who should know better engaged in when Mikhail Sergeyevich crossed the final summit. "Mikhail Gorbachev, loved abroad and reviled at home, whose reform and openness set in motion forces that freed Eastern Europe, ended the USSR and Communism in Europe and ended the Cold War, is dead at 91. What an extraordinary and complicated figure!"  I don't know, maybe a Pope, Lady Thatcher, President Reagan, with extraordinary service by Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa had something to do with it.

In a Gorbasm clip, though, it's the swooning by Our Intellectual Betters that gave the clip its bite.

On this big day of Gorbachev’s arrival, literally thousands of Americans were shepherded to the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base, because HE was arriving. These were various members of the press. They were members of the state department and other liberal intelligentsia who felt finally for the first time in seven years safe and relief that Gorbachev was coming, meaning Gorbachev was going talk to Reagan and talk Reagan out of blowing up the world. Was going to tell Reagan it was not a good thing to do, that everybody would die, and so they were all gathered on the tarmac, and there, in the sky, the first visible sign of the arrival of him, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev.
