QUOTE OF THE DAY:
(Go out and) pick up a great work of classic literature and enjoy the reading. You know, like the kind they used to assign in college when English professors taught English instead of homosexuality and feminism.

That's Mike Adams at North Carolina-Wilmington (motto: Fort Fisher has fallen) on his summer reading plans. His column upset a reader from Ithaca, New York, and Professor Adams did a little work on the research specialties of the English faculty at Cornell (where the hockey team once gave up five goals to Wisconsin in ten minutes with the national finals on the line; surrendering comes as naturally to Cornell as it does to the French, but I digress.) The column makes for some interesting reading, with a sting in the tail.

RUNNING EXTRA: The comments to King's post on Professor Adams's column link to these reasoned comments and this more spirited riposte suggesting inter alia that Professor Adams has quoted selectively from the field descriptions at Cornell's website. Professor Adams has already written a response to some of his critics.
