EVERYBODY GETS TO SUFFER IN COUNTERPRODUCTIVE CONSTRUCTION DELAYS.

It's not enough that Wisconsin's department of transportation has to work on the expressways south, west and northwest of Milwaukee.  Now they hope to add a third lane in each direction on the easterly expressway running north.  There will be two years of construction delays.  "These changes are being made to address existing and future traffic volumes, pavement and structural needs. It will also improve safety and address deficiencies including clearance at bridges, visibility and merging and weaving distances, according to a state Department of Transportation project overview."  Will it be worth it?  "According to the state Department of Transportation website, I-43 carries 49,000 vehicles per day south of Highway 60 and 85,460 vehicles per day north of Silver Spring Drive, with future projections raising those figures to 65,000 and 112,500 by 2040, respectively."

The induced demand is right there in the forecast, dear reader.  When the work is done, it will be just as congested as it currently is.  There is no discussion of high occupancy toll lanes, let alone toll roads, in Wisconsin.

And yet, those north suburban motorists are of the class of citizens who will call any expenditure on rail transportation toward the northern suburbs a waste of public money.
