THE PUNCHLINES WRITE THEMSELVES.

Shrill Democrats (excuse the repetition) are so prone to claim that if they don't get their way People. Will. Die. that there's even a meme.

There's a class of wisecracks along the line of "They told me that if I didn't vote for Lori Lightfoot Chicago would be overwhelmed by a crime wave ..."  In California, now it's "Vote against the recall or people will die."  Should Gavin Newsom not be recalled and replaced, there are likely to be new wisecracks as people continue to contract Wuhan coronavirus irrespective of the ukases, or as the tent cities and the metropolitan areas continue to decay.

It's possible that the students of electoral design will have more material for their work, as the vote for a replacement governor is a simple first-past-the-post, no runoffs provided for.  "It seems as though the hope here is that recall opponents don't select a replacement. If they don't, then it seems very likely that, yes, Newsom will have gotten more votes than his replacement because so many people didn't cast a second vote."  That's the way California crumbles, despite their three National League teams waging a compelling pennant race.
