SEASON'S END

The DeKalb Municipal Band closed out their 169th season Tuesday evening.  Despite the heat, the concert drew a lot of spectators, and the band presented a number of tunes that are new, in my experience, to the rotation.  Here's John Klohr's Billboard.

Yes, that has the sound of a circus screamer, and if you've learned some words to go with the trio, you're not alone.  I can confirm that there is a fratty rendition that would probably cause contemporary Student Affairs types to lose their composure.  The program's announcer said Mr Klohr wrote the music as a tribute to Billboard, the program magazine distributed at the live theater.  Whatever.

A "Looking Back" entry for July of this year noted, "Hundreds of favorable comments were heard following the concert last evening by the DeKalb Municipal Band under the direction of Dee Palmer, which was playing at Hopkins Park with the new band shell being used for the first time."  That was also Maestro Palmer's first season as band leader.  He last directed Stars and Stripes Forever to conclude the 2011 season, crossing the final summit later that year.

Although the band's programming has changed some in the past dozen years, the final concert of the season still concludes with the four compositions Maestro Palmer traditionally scheduled for that day.  The Good Lord willing and the crick don't rise, there will be more concerts to document commencing June 11 of 2024.
