FESTUNG CHICAGO.

Both major parties held their presidential nominating conventions within day-trip distance of Cold Spring Shops headquarters.  In Milwaukee, all the convention events were on the west side of the Milwaukee River.  I got wind of an event involving proper beer in the Third Ward.

There might have been such events set up for visitors to Chicago and I didn't get the memo.  That's fine, there's always the DePaul bookstore run by Barnes and Noble downtown.  They still sell real books.

The most productive way to get to the United Center from Elburn is to leave the scoot at Oak Park and ride the L.  These days, there's a $5 day pass for the L trains.

At Oak Park Avenue, a singer was working on a few of the old standards to motivate the protests that have been going on.

Vehicular traffic cannot go south of Damen at Lake Street, although foot traffic for and from the L station and the neighborhoods is permitted.

The Suder Montessori Magnet Middle School is not in session.  That fence protects the playground.  It is serving as a rally point for first responders.  There were lots of police and a few EMT personnel nearby.

The United Center, behind the fence, at Seeley.  That's still the Sears Tower.

Bernauer Strasse, er, Seeley.  Many of the flats and new townhouses in the neighborhood have their own iron railings.

Somewhere back there is the Slice King, Bacci Pizzeria.  A security man I chatted with noted it is still open, doing a good business for the security and first responders and perhaps credentialed delegates and journos on breaks.

I was making my way back to the L at Damen when these billboard trucks rolled west on Lake.  "Loyal Democrats, Your Elite Overlords Thank You For Your Faithful Service."  I couldn't make out the fine print, those could have been hired by the Jihadi Fan Club types protesting the corporatist part of the Democrats, or the Trump organization could have hired them.

There are some policy areas in which the populists to the left of Bernie Sanders and some of the Trump voters have only subtle disagreements with each other.  The next two months could be interesting.

The DePaul bookstore?  Yes, the wallet is a little lighter and the book bags were heavy!
