THAT RUMBLING NOISE YOU HEAR IS MOTHER JONES TURNING OVER. Atlantic Blog finds all sorts of problems with the logic in a Natasha Walter report on the migration of women from the old Communist bloc to Britain, where they become nannies to the middle class. The nanny used to be an upper-class thing (Mary Poppins bringing the children to a picnic with chimney-sweeps indeed) but with increased labor force participation of middle-class women, it's expanding. The underlying economics is the same: the richer woman (whether married or not) farms out the child care to a poorer one.
