1.2.17

TEN YEARS AGO.

We were contemplating additional Amtrak service between Chicago and Milwaukee, with an extension to Madison.

The Madison extension died in the Wisconsin Legislature, a casualty of misleading framing by opponents and inadequate explanation of its merits by supporters.

Additional schedules east of Milwaukee?  Still hung up in wrangling over the placement of sidings to recess freight trains.  And connectivity at Chicago?  Each regional route is a negotiation involving Amtrak, the contracting freight carrier, and one or more state departments of transportation.

There are hints of yet another summer to come, and I'm still fighting it out on the same line.
