ATROCITY IN SPAIN. Trains are not supposed to be targets for terrorists. Unfortunately, the morning commuter trains of Madrid were attacked overnight. Iberian Notes has continuing coverage, with a description of the trains and stations attacked and the operational tactics (no suicide bombers, expect more careful scrutiny of abandoned luggage in the days to come). Transport Blog, which provided the links, debates whether or not the security of the trains is a topic for consideration. At Where Worlds Collide, the sentiment is "it could happen here." That was also a topic for discussion on the late evening news, as non-passengers enjoy much easier access to U.S. trains and buses than they do to airliners. Captain's Quarters mulls the geopolitical possibilities, while Apt. 11-D recalls happier times in Madrid.
The Superintendent mourns the deaths of commuters and railroaders, and condemns the misuse of the railroads to make political statements.
