Let's take stock of a few things that took place in 1971.
Amtrak took over most of the intercity passenger trains. The transition to government funding of the commuter trains took a few more years.
High school graduations took place in person. The Milwaukee Hamilton graduating class of 1971 was so large that two ceremonies occurred, in order for everyone to be seated. Whether that was to make the case for building a stadium there, or foreshadowing work on the second shift, is for others to decide.
Ferroequinologists, primarily in New England, organized the Boston and Maine Railroad Historical Society. The railroad might be a fallen flag, but there's plenty of material that can be put on digital platforms.
A new coffee company called Starbucks, after a Pequod crew member, opened in the Seattle public market, which probably wasn't as upscale then as it is now.
