The way Miami [Florida] is enforcing mask requirements vindicates the case against {Florida governor Ron DeSantis's] mandates [asking municipalities not to enforce mask requirements]. Police are setting up mask traps and randomly fining people not wearing masks outside, where the risks of transmission are much lower.I'm not in the mood to adjudicate local abuses as opposed to executive orders by governors, of which there are way too many already.
DeSantis was right to try to put a stop to these abuses with his executive order. Hopefully, more will be done to prevent those municipalities from trying to issue fines.
Municipalities, though, find themselves (for a variety of reasons) shy of tax revenues, which is why red light cameras are popular (as are assorted other Intrusions Approved by Wise Experts) as methods of raising revenue, and if you don't have traffic lights, maybe you set up speed traps or have overweening methods of raising money from residents, such as fines for malfunctioning tail lights, or jaywalking charges for walking in streets, when the city hasn't even provided sidewalks.
