THE BUNDLE IS TOO D**N BIG.

The national election approaches, and, yes, they matter, but there's no easy way to divide the questions people face, short of gridlocking the government, which is what is often the case.  Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward concedes that voting matters.

Replacing your toilet is an important choice, and you'd be absolutely furious if your plumber told you that, despite the existence of numerous makes and models, due to the way the toilet selection system works you must pick right now between one that leaks and another that has a broken seat. The more fundamental something is, the angrier and more vocal you should be at being asked to choose between bad options. You do not have a moral obligation to talk yourself into the idea that a damp bathroom floor is OK, no matter what people are saying in your social media feeds or on your family phone calls.

Let alone that if you like your bathtub, you can't keep your bathtub.

We are not saying the outcome of this election doesn't matter. Elections matter. The next four years will be different in important ways for many, many people depending on who is president. Different wars will be waged. Different taxes will be levied. Different laws will be passed. Different judges will be appointed. Different bureaucracies will be empowered. Different research will be funded. Elections matter. That's why we're so disappointed at the low quality of the available options.

She doesn't address the bundles directly. Salena Zito does. (Shorter version: the only recourse people have is to gridlock the government.)

The hard and very vocal Left will demand climate change legislation, defunding or deep restructuring of our nation’s police forces, free college tuition, a $15 minimum wage, "Medicare for all," and a restructuring of our education system to include radical lessons like the 1619 Project as part of the curriculum.

They will take their demands to social media, the streets, and to Washington until they get what they want. That is not a threat; that is just a reality. Biden is not the far-Left's candidate, but he is the means to an end of Trump. Once elected, there is a valid expectation of a far-left reward for voting for Biden.

The moderate Democrats, independents, and suburban Republicans who may put Biden into office won’t go willingly along with sweeping government changes to satisfy activists, nor the higher taxes needed to support them. They won’t take to the streets, but they will silently move away from the coalition they decided to dip their toe in. The result will be an instantaneous shift back toward Republican candidates for the 2022 midterm elections, and the wildly swinging wave elections we’ve been experiencing since 2006 will continue.

In short, there is no exit from the roller coaster anytime soon.

We keep sending Washington a message with our votes every two years, and Washington keeps misreading the results.

I suspect that the political class behave the way it does less because they are a sclerotic inbred "meritocracy" than that they understand it's not as easy for people to tell an institution that has a monopoly on violence "your onion soup sucks, we're outta here."

On the other hand, the disaffected Trump voters of southeastern Wisconsin might also be disaffected with that Biden bundle.

While Trump's voter core has found an almost infinite capacity to explain away or forgive the President's personal conduct and rhetoric, the more independent voters of the WOW counties wish they could have the conservative judges and tax cuts without the Trump circus. Still, the Democrats could scare enough voters into supporting Trump.

Higher taxes, threats to gun rights and even more talk by Biden's fellow Democrats about defunding the police, will remind many suburban voters why they didn't trust the Democrats four years ago. And if the Democrats fall into the trap of attacking Judge Amy Coney Barrett for her religious beliefs during her confirmation hearings, the Supreme Court vacancy could be enough to bring wayward Wisconsin Republican voters home -- just as another Supreme Court vacancy did in 2016.

There's a positive case for so voting.  It's still a bundle: you get the reality show along with the constitutional conservatives filling judicial positions.
