In 2016, the Harvard Young Republicans endorsed Gary Johnson over Donald Trump. A few weeks ago, that club decided to endorse Donald Trump (that might not be a bad call: no to tax increases, no to continued lockdowns, no to rioting and looting) only to be charged by their more woke classmates with trafficking in white supremacy and disregarding student safety.
More telling is the concluding passage of a Harvard Crimson editorial criticizing the endorsement. "As young elites make peace with and even come to embrace his style and politics, an important, scary truth emerges: the Republican Party’s Trumpian elements will continue long after he does." How often does a non-reflective educated aesthete recoil in horror to a statement with a "How can you SAY that?" Might it be that the current crop of Harvard Young Republicans understand that maybe the educated aesthetes have gotten a few things wrong over the years, and, for better or worse, Our President came up with a diagnosis and a corrective for all of that hubris?
