The eternally unpleasant. "My people don’t fly the American flag. In fact, we hate the flag and what it represents: a deeply flawed nation. And we don’t like the Americans who proudly wave it either. Patriotism has always been for other people, or other generations." Read it in full, she gave up on the people she thought of as "my people."
Winning. "Biden is quoted as saying, 'Many of the things I worked so damn hard, that I thought I changed in the country, are changing so rapidly.' You can almost hear everyone who voted for Trump answering, 'Yes, that’s the point.'"
Political economy is hard. "Republicans once talked seriously about aligning taxes and spending. They cared about economic distortion, simplicity, and broadening the tax base. Now, too many just want the sugar rush of tax cuts without fiscal discipline. Meanwhile, Democrats want to vastly expand the state and pretend that billionaires alone can foot the bill. Both sides are wrong. The math doesn't work, and the morality of the reckless spending is worse."
A lot can happen in three weeks. The resumption of pithy elaborations on traditional Cold Spring Shops themes will focus today on the more timely topics. The mix of pessimistic labels is deliberate.
2. Organizational survival. "An establishment that is organized around a problem is unlikely to go about actually solving that problem: What will its high-paid people, in prestigious jobs, do if that happens?" It's not as easy to shift focus as March of Dimes could.
4. Vox populi? "The American foreign policy establishment, with its moral hubris, comes across as deeply flawed. And Donald Trump comes across as wiser." That hasn't been hard lately.
5. No solutions, only trade-offs. "It's easy to be a consequentialist when you don't actually have to deal with the consequences."
6. Only in Chicago. "It can happen anywhere."
7. By their fruits. "Despite decaying cities, out-to-lunch governance, and worse-than-useless federal agencies, 'progressive' dolts somehow keep preaching their fantasy that collectivist liberalism produces good government." The left has already killed Chicago.
9. Prophetic. "But the media’s obsession with turning every hot day into a climate catastrophe risks numbing the public to real threats. When every heat wave is a 'heat dome,' and every 'heat dome' is a harbinger of doom, it’s easy to roll your eyes and tune out and this is the exact opposite of what responsible journalism should achieve."
10. People tune out. "I’ve cut off my alerts because of how often they go off for no real reason. It used to be the alerts meant something, and you got useful information from them. Now, you get the equivalent of the reams of useless paper that come with a one paragraph note from Medicare or any other government program."
11. Nature has a say. "Last summer, a massive submarine volcano erupted in Tonga in the South Pacific. The eruption released such a large volume of CO2 that climate experts have had to readjust their calculations (computer models). They now concede that the contemporary rise in atmospheric CO2 has not been due primarily to the combustion of fossil fuels. Those same previously underappreciated volcanoes have made a much larger contribution to the rise in CO2 than previously thought."
12. Indeed. "Donald Trump is responsible for many things. The weather is not one of them."
14. It's a wonderful concept. "Limiting the power of a branch of government is something that can only happen in America."
16. Politics is a drag on civilization. "The more a system demands of voters, the more some voters get left behind."
17. Democrats live in a parallel reality. (Silly pundit, give us more government or PEOPLE WILL DIE.)
18. Reality knocks on the treasury door. "Countries that Americans often think of as socialist have reformed their retirement benefits because they ran out of other people’s money."
19. Ronald Reagan couldn't find them. "Where are all those unperverted Muslims? In the common rooms of American universities?"
20. Thanks, neurotic feminists. "Men aren’t hiding from intimacy; they’re hiding from performative Blue Zone hystericism and the culture of manufactured crisis."
21. The "democracy" fantasy. "Her conduct reflects a deeper problem on the left: the belief that if the system doesn’t produce the outcome they want, it must be broken. Instead of accepting that the law sometimes cuts against their agenda, they attack the court’s legitimacy."
22. Your motorcar, a Marshallian improvement. "It really blows my mind how much my mobility is expanded."
23. Market tests have steep grading curves. "Doing alphabet propaganda needed to be punished, and Bud Light was severely so."
