21.1.22

FRIDAY short TAKES.

We're still working off the backlog from the Festive Season closure, although it's likely we're caught up on the nonsense for now.

Stand by for more public health panic over the large crowds at the divisional round of the football playoffs.

1.  Reality comes for the epistemic closure.  "Why Do Today’s Democrats Have Such Terrible Political Instincts?"

3.  Why do Fourth Turnings happen?  "Is the fact that our institutions, and our media, tolerate one side attacking the rule of law while hammering on the oppositions attacks?"

4.  Goodbye, California? "[T]he state’s signature surfboard could be replaced by the walker."  (Years ago, government overreach led to jurisdictions residually occupied by dummies.)

5.  Rein in the faucisti.  "[W]e need a new set of laws which set clear limits on executive power across the country and on the declaring of emergencies for any period beyond a week."

6.  Take stock of the faucistii and their exercise of perverse power.  "It is still hard to fathom the number of freedoms, information, and liberty we have willingly given away for the past two years during the pandemic to the influential cultural curators within government and institutions such as unions, academia, media, and corporations."

7.  Now roll back the administrative state.  "Separation of powers, federalism, and religious liberty mean precious little if a president can pronounce kingly edicts and demand he be obeyed."  Are we really better off because the arbitrary authority has a license to be arbitrary somewhere in the enabling legislation?  "The thing about autocratic policies is that they eventually always fail."

8.  Two for the Fourth Turning?  Take the professional-managerial class.  "I think it is no exaggeration to say that a growing number of people in America, the West, and around the globe, generally, are looking around at what the 'elite' have wrought these last seventy-five years and do not like what they see."  A worldwide storm is brewing.

9.  She's right.  "A democratic society functions only when one faction knows it can't single-handedly write the rules for everyone else."

10.  Evergreen.  "When people on the left are hurling allegations of racism that often just means someone is standing in the way of whatever they want to do."

12.  So let it be with woke wine women generally.  "Basically, it lets her lecture and berate anyone who doesn’t agree, and that’s really the only enjoyment these people get in life."  Expose, mock, repeat.

13.  Complexity will have its say.  "We have nationalized every issue, and national leaders have responded by claiming to be able to fix every problem facing every American citizen. They pass a vaguely worded law and push authority over to the vast administrative state while ignoring the application of that law and avoiding accountability for the law."

14.  There is always a great deal of ruin in a nation.  "The outstanding question is whether the country will be able to survive three more years of a deep state conspiracy presided over by an angry, incompetent, and increasingly senile puppet."

15.  Gooder and harder, to steal an expression.  "It’s tempting to look at Detroit and feel bad for the people living there, but the people living there empowered the politicians who ripped off and ruined the city, reelecting them over and over."

16.  Evolutionary stability is present, even if no squirrel writes it down.  "For instance, baby red grouse who aren't abandoned by their fathers 'are more likely to succeed in establishing their own territories.' Baby squirrels whose mothers hoard food for winter 'are much more likely to survive until the spring.'"  You have to be an intellectual to take seriously the notion that such commonplaces aren't valid.

17.  Reap what you sow, self-styled progressives.  "The Democrats have been full partners in the dismantling of our democracy, refusing to banish dark and corporate money from the electoral process and governing, as Obama did, through presidential executive actions, agency "guidance," notices and other regulatory dark matter that bypass Congress."

18.  On occasion, public radio gets something right.  "While monopoly power and greed do result in higher prices for consumers, there's no evidence to suggest that they've gotten worse and significantly driven prices up over the last year."

19.  Undoing the false economy that was downsizing the railroads.  "Taking a page out of the Brightline playbook, the restoration of previous multi-track main lines may be a good place to start; both the former New York Central and Pennsylvania properties probably have something to offer here. Silver lining for freight railroads: since short/medium-haul passenger service tends not to run overnight, this could be a capacity bonus for the freight railroad for one-third of each day."

20.  Nobody is interested in winning.  "One of the amazing things about this moment is that so many top Republicans and Democrats are desperate to change the rules of voting in order to win but so few are willing to adjust their policies and rhetoric to just win with undeniable majorities."

21.  Biden looks bad.  "To win an exhausted nation's admiration, all Joe Biden had to do was nothing. Instead, he's burning future votes like kindling."

22.  Fauci must go.  "He denounced people for attending college-football games in a region of the country where Covid was in seasonal decline. No outbreak materialized."

23.  The coot has no idea.  "This is delusional in the sense Biden means, congratulating himself for 'achievements' such as presiding over an economy trying to heal itself in fits and starts if only he would get out of the way, and continuing the vaccine rollout bequeathed to him by his predecessor."

24.  Fourth Turnings are complicated.  "Sadly, it appears too much to ask that trying times lead to a rejection of both authoritarian strongmen and trust-the-experts style faith in mainstream politicians."

25.  We betrayed our children.  "Our students were taught to think of their schools as hubs for infection and themselves as vectors of disease."
