RECANT OR BE EXCOMMUNICATED.

It doesn't have the force of Pope Linus ordering Martin Luther, on pain of stronger penalties, to take his 95 theses down, and Pope Francis is not in favor of the Archbishop of San  Francisco, Slavatore Cardileone, excommunicating, in the narrow sense of the word, House speaker Nancy Pelosi.

As you have not publicly repudiated your position on abortion, and continue to refer to your Catholic faith in justifying your position and to receive Holy Communion, that time has now come. Therefore, in light of my responsibility as the Archbishop of San Francisco to be “concerned for all the Christian faithful entrusted to [my] care” (Code of Canon Law, can. 383, §1), by means of this communication I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion, until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.

Please know that I stand ready to continue our conversation at any time, and will continue to offer up prayer and fasting for you.

Rod Dreher notes, "It is sad that this was necessary. But necessary it certainly was — not least for the salvation of Nancy Pelosi’s soul. I wish we had more bishops like him, in all the churches, including my own."

Full excommunication means no access to any of the sacraments, including Confession (prior to Penance.)  I wonder if the Speaker previously confessed and did penance for some of her more public sins, such as Pride (getting that haircut during corona tyranny that had the hair salons closed), Gluttony (that freezer full of designer ice cream), Wrath (directed at the Squad for daring to challenge her leadership), and Envy (tearing up an official document President Trump handed her.)

The Speaker likes to invoke Catholicism as a basis for the bundle of public policies other than abortion that attempt to achieve in secular form what Catholic social teaching about "preferential options for the poor" or what the Protestant Social Gospel advocate in the abstract.  Mrs Pelosi, I suppose, could opt to worship with the local Methodists or the Unitarians, and be able to have her welfare state for the children that didn't get aborted, without earning the disapproval of the archbishop.
