Canadian Pacific, the once and future owner of The Milwaukee Road's route of the Arrow to Kansas City, has made improvements to its tracks through northern DeKalb County to permit freight trains to cruise at forty miles an hour.
The city administrator in Genoa does not anticipate any safety risks as a consequence of the faster trains.
There may be a few citizens that remember 100 mph passenger trains on that line.
This Wikimedia Commons image shows the Midwest Hiawatha at Bensenville, Illinois (the tower controls the junction of the line to Savanna with the freight bypass for trains headed into Wisconsin or the transcontinental line.) That's one of the world's fastest steam locomotives in charge, and it's likely to have the train rolling through Genoa at much better than 40 mph.
