Apologize. Then exit stage left and let us never hear from you again. She continues, "Don’t apologize, we don’t believe you anyway."
You fearful, quiet politicians who let extended lockdowns destroy businesses, fray the fabric of our cities and cost us all so much: We saw you maskless, at concerts and parties, while our 2-year-olds stay masked to this day.
We know that you didn’t actually think masking was important like you implored us it was. You loved your power and nothing else mattered. Apologize.
That's what happens when we figure out who treats freedom as a contingent claim. They'll revert to form.
The pandemic could be waning, maybe, and the impulse might be to forgive, without any apologies, and forget. We can’t do that. A new variant can easily emerge and the people who have been wrong for two years will go right back to forcing their failed prescriptions on us all. Now, if Bulwark squishes and legacy media tame conservatives would figure that out. Consider S. E. Cupp.
Last year, right around the same time, we saw a loosening of COVID regulations only to have them come roaring back with the Delta variant in summer. We can’t keep doing this.
There’s barely anything left of conservatism inside the GOP, and it certainly isn’t animating its stars or its voters anymore, not as much as culture wars and owning the libs.I suppose I could reframe that as "Consider the source." It might be that Sarah Elizabeth's animus with the current crop of populists styling themselves as conservative is pique over Conservative, Inc.'s being tossed out of the gatherings.
Case in point, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, once a Democratic candidate for president, is a special guest at this year’s CPAC — not because she’s conservative, but because she sufficiently and regularly dumps on the left, buying her cost of entry.
It seems as though the right may finally be starting to drop the charade.
Listen, you’ll get no argument here. But this is a breathtaking admission, that in order to service the overweening ego of Donald Trump and satisfy his rabid and impressionable voters, the once-leading conservative organization is simply jettisoning the conservatism. Not somebody who suggested the way to punish Republicans who were too Trump-friendly is to vote for Democrats, no way. That is to say, S. E. Cupp, and the Bulwark types, and George Will. The pompous, bow-tied, Chicago Cub and American Flyer fan is still at it, still trying to shame the Trumpian elements of the Republican coalition. But in the middle of that sermon, he destroys any punish-Trumpians-by-voting-for-Donks argument.
Of course, conservatism will carry on without Mr. Schlapp. It will outlive him. It will exist as a set of values whether he “uses” it or not.
But there’s no question it’s dead within this current Republican Party. Who will resurrect it is the important question.
From Capitol Hill to city halls, Democrats have presided over surges of debt, inflation, crime, pandemic authoritarianism and educational intolerance. Public schools, a point of friction between citizens and government, are hostages of Democratic-aligned teachers unions that have positioned K-12 education in an increasingly adversarial relationship with parents. The most lethal threat to Democrats, however, is the message Americans are hearing from the party’s media-magnified progressive minority: You should be ashamed of your country.Exactly, and I'm not alone in being sick of the stupid. Mr Will might be right that Mr Trump's I-wuz-robbed schtick is wearing thin and that voters can ignore him, but that should not encourage Democrats or discourage libertarians and conservatives. Emily Jashinsky elaborates.
Democrats cannot simply pretend the summer of 2020 and the lockdowns never happened, no matter how much the media might help them try, because the party has now spent years committing to inflated definitions of bigotry that would condemn any moderation from their positions. That includes members of the coot's Congressional caucus.
Sure, voters have short memories and the media is complicit. But these definitions are now baked into our institutions. They are ingrained in the minds of a generation. They’re clung to by journalists and activists that Democrats need to please.
Democrats are looking at a potential blowout in November if they can’t reverse voters’ negative impressions of what they’ve accomplished since gaining control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. Progressives are nursing a grudge over the Build Back Better bill. They supported a bipartisan infrastructure bill on the assurance that legislation would follow to address the climate crisis and boost the social safety net.Make that a small wing that makes noise far out of proportion to its numbers, while relying on an identity politics that doesn't have the kind of purchase the faculty lounge types wish it did. "Hispanics vote more like non-college white voters than a minority group, which is why Democrats are losing ground with this fast growing part of the electorate." Tell me, Eleanor Clift, which minority groups you have in mind. Convince me there aren't college educated voters who are having second thoughts about Democrats at all levels, for the reasons Mr Will enumerated. Let Kevin Downey elaborate.
That didn’t happen, and they blame moderate Democratic senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema—as well as other centrists they call “corporate Democrats”—for supposedly misleading them.
“They have the mistaken theory that standing up to Joe Biden is going to help them get what they want,” says Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution. “All it does is alienate all the Democrats they need to make friends of. It’s a wing of the party that wants to act out their fantasy.”
We fled Detroit to the suburbs in 1976 after crime started hitting too close to home. Every kid in our neighborhood and been thumped, jumped, beaten, or had a knife or gun stuck in our faces. He's more militant than I, and he's on a roll.
Crime was non-existent in Sterling Heights, Mich. back when my parents moved there. It exploded years later under the not-so sterling leadership of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. A Sterling Heights man was shot by a Detroit thug who had followed the victim home from a bar. A woman in her 70s was carjacked at the Kroger’s grocery store my dad shopped at. These things didn’t happen in Sterling Heights before Whitmer, a Democrat, took charge. We moved out of Detroit, but “Detroit” followed us to the ‘burbs. Yet another reason the Democrats lost Michigan in 2016.
We former Democrats weren’t like coastal libs (though I was one of those too for a while). We don’t want our police defunded; we want them to introduce their night-sticks to Antifa’s gender-free foreheads. We are gun-loving, freedom-embracing Americans who not only dislike the direction in which the country is going, we are ready to fight to make sure our freedoms are secure for our kids, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. We cheered when Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted for doing what every one of us would have done: ventilate the communists trying to kill us and take our towns. He does provide the Bulwark-Cupp-Will crowd stuff to cringe at. "We are starting to see real guts from some Republican politicians, people like Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), and Lauren Boebert, (R-Colo.), just to name a few."
Dear reader, if you're uneasy about that sort of Republican (the two female Members of Congress he lists give off a nympho ex-girlfriend vibe, to borrow from Kurt Schlichter, when they're done, your credit cards and car keys have vanished with them) and your choice is between a Trumpian showboater and a Squad-adjacent Democrat, reject the false binary, and don't let those irritated rumps on the extreme get your vote. There might be libertarians or socialists or free-soilers elsewhere on the ballot.
