REPRISING THE EAST WIND. Destination: Freedom covers plans to extend Amtrak's Downeaster service to Freeport, Brunswick, Augusta and other Maine cities. The article refers to the Downeaster as ranking "number one" for customer service. There's something to be said for reliable, fast passenger train service without lots of expensive high-tech equipment. Now if Guilford, or Pan Am Rail, or whatever the carrier is called could recapture the Ned French era Boston and Maine - Maine Central esprit (say, the way Canadian Pacific has absorbed Milwaukee's traditions of snappy running and good timekeeping on the Hiawatha) ...
